Introduction to John Green

John Green. YouTube vlogger. Crash Course Giver. Indianian. Husband. Father. Author. He's a man of many talents. I am here to talk to you about this last one I mentioned- being an author. John Green has a very lighthearted aura to him when he is in Crash Course YouTube videos and makes jokes frequently. If you check out his channel (shared with his brother), I'm sure you would be shocked to know he is also a romance novelist who incorporates deep and insightful content and thought into all of his books. Each has a unique 'quirk' to it, so to speak, and it make every book he writes extremely memorable.
John Green has written some amazing books like Paper Towns, Turtles All the Way Down, and The Fault in Our Stars, among others. You may have even heard of some of them, the last one of which a movie, starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort (both of whom were also in Divergent- also an amazing book and movie series), was based on. Paper Towns also has a movie based on it. I can personally say that each and every one of the aforementioned books is phenomenal. Just a warning for those who are concerned, these are also all young adult books and may contain mildly 'inappropriate' scenes and/or some profanity.
Now, what I meant when I said "quirk" above is that every story that he writes has an element in it that you'd probably never seen in a book before. This could be woven into the personality of the character or even the plot of the books. Sometimes it might be exploring a disease that more people need to know about. Other times it could be  For example, in Turtles All the Way Down, the main character, Aza Holmes, has OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) and anxiety and has to help her friend solve a mystery about where his billionaire dad went. Being inside Aza's mind is so interesting and also really helps the reader understand the effect OCD and anxiety have on people. Another book, Paper Towns, is about two teenagers who go around pranking people, getting revenge, and breaking rules/laws all night. Saying this, even though his books do contain romance, they appeal to many different readers.
In conclusion, John Green is an author that you don't come by every day. His books are engaging, creative, informative, and will keep you up reading all night. Even if you aren't the kind of person to read novels with any bit of romance in them, I urge you to give his books a try. You may be surprised by how much you enjoy the humor and themes in them and what you may learn. Overall, John Green is an author whose books you should definitely take a chance on and whose books you will probably come to love.

  1. Great job! This review gives a great overview of John Green's work, and what makes him different
from other authors of young adult fiction. I look forward to trying John Green- eventually. I'm honestly a bit skeptical, though (I'm sorry!) because I don't see how one person can create so many interesting and unique books in the same genre and for the same audience. Maybe I'll find this view wrong once I actually read some of the books...

  2. You explained the brilliance of the author really well. I have also read all the books you mentioned and I think you did a really good job explaining the ones you did. I especially liked how you went into some detail for turtles all the way down, as that is my personal favorite of the books mentioned and I especially agree that it is really interesting. I even got one of my friends to read it! (but you might know that). I also agree that the crash courses are pretty fun to watch and the books are really fun to read. Great blog post!

  6. Great job! I thought that everything you said was really interesting. I have heard about John Green but I haven’t gotten a chance to read any of his books. You really explained what they are about and what the things that make them special are. I agree that it is rare to find a book that many different kinds of people like and I think that all the special things he includes sound really interesting. I’m looking forward to reading one of his books!

  7. I have always loved watching John Green, because of his chaotic but incredibly informative videos. I have also read Turtles All The Way Down, and it was a great read. You gave a great description of him as a person and as an author.

  8. I've personally heard extremely little about his books! I always watched his WWII Crash Courses and I loved the little student that he acted out. Also his computer has a sticker that says "this machine kills Fascists" or something. Anyway it was interesting to read about his career as an author and I might check one of his books out later!
